Packaging Tips to Avoid Product Returns

Packaging has an essential role for today’s companies and customers. Besides product protection, it has a number of functions in marketing, sales, and brand awareness.

According to a survey done by uShip, it is seen that 1 in 5 e-commerce packages arrive damaged. Another survey shows that around 26% of the goods are either refunded or returned, and most of them are not fit for resale.

These numbers might not look that big, but when you take into consideration of the whole retail market globally, it is a huge chunk.

Some of The Repercussions of Product Returns in Retail Are:

  • Additional labour cost to process the return
  • Customer communication and refunding
  • Negative brand reputation
  • Inability to foresee sales prediction

Product damage can be caused due to many reasons—poor packaging materials, rough handling of fragile items, improper tools, environmental issues.

As a brand, the quality of packaging supplies like cardboard storage boxes, small bubble wrap rolls, void fillers, packing tapes, corrugated boxes, and others should be prioritised. If you are getting a significant amount of product returns, investigate your packaging supplies and techniques. Your packaging should be able to withstand:

  • Time- Consider the time your packaged product will be stored or transported. If you supply perishable items, it needs to be delivered as soon as possible and packed in corrugated boxes.
  • Compression- Check how well your package can hold when placed below other packages. It should be sturdy and durable.
  • Vibration- Roads are unpredictable, and vibrations are a part of transportation. Make your packaging strong to deal with a conveyer belt, truck, airplanes, and other forms of transport.
  • Distance- If you ship your items abroad, it is essential to note that the package will be travelling for a long time. Your packaging should be good enough to travel long distances.
  • Temperature- Will there be humidity? Will there be a sudden temperature change? Things like these need to be considered before shipping packaging.
