Food is everyone’s favourite and is needed to fulfil our nutritional requirements. When it comes to food, we are choosy and specific. People have food requirements that vary from person to person. 

However, not all food preferences are a personal choice but sometimes how our body processes certain foods decide whether we can eat them or not. Yes, I am talking about food allergies that hinder the consumption of certain foods or ingredients in foods. 

These food allergies are pretty common and can impact so many people. I came across it when my nephew was diagnosed with pollen allergy and was taken to the best allergy specialist in Lahore. There began our struggle with food allergy and dealing with it made me realize that many of these food allergies are poorly understood and can have serious consequences. 

Common Myths about Food Allergies

Keeping this misinformation in mind, I thought to enlist some of the common misconceptions about food allergies. In case you are wondering what these are, here are some of the common misconceptions about food allergies that you need to know about. 

1- Food allergies are uncommon

Many people believe that food allergies are not so common. Just because you haven’t heard of these frequently, this doesn’t mean that food allergies are rare or uncommon. Food allergies are quite common and can affect people of all ages, from newborn babies to older adults, anyone can be affected by food allergies. 

2- Allergies and intolerances are the same

When it comes to food, people have their preferences and so do their body systems. Not always, but in many cases, eating certain foods can give rise to the symptoms that tell you that a particular food is not good for you. However, many people believe that if they are unable to digest a particular food it means they are allergic to this. But let me tell you the truth that this isn’t completely true as food allergies and food intolerances are two different things. 

If you are allergic to a certain food or substance, it means that your immune system is responding against it but if you are intolerant to a particular food it simply means that your digestive system is unable to process it properly. So, considering allergies and intolerances is one popular myth when it comes to food allergies. 

3- Don’t introduce food allergens in your child’s diet before they are three years old

Many people believe that keeping their children away from food allergens during their early years can be a good idea. However, there is no solid evidence of this and you can introduce all the foods in your child’s diet as soon as they can chew solid foods and allergen-containing foods are not an exception to this. However, people who have a family history of allergies should need to be very careful about introducing these foods into their children's diet and talk to the physician as soon as they start seeing any symptoms. 

4- You can add small amounts of allergens to your diet to eliminate the allergy

Next in the list of common food allergy myths comes the belief that you may include smaller amounts of food allergens into your diet to eliminate these allergies permanently. People believe that they can gradually train their immune system and eliminate food allergies however, this is not always applicable. The method can be used but doesn't guarantee the results and should only be used after getting a recommendation from your physician. Don't attempt foods that can cause an allergic reaction, and don't wait for your symptoms to go gone.

5- Food allergies are linked to ADHD

Many people believe that the consumption of allergy-causing foods can cause ADHD. However, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not related to food allergies in any way. You may experience worsening symptoms after consumption of allergy-causing food but this doesn’t cause ADHD

You should also understand when to use the techniques for overcoming allergic reaction symptoms. If you experience a severe allergic reaction to food, go to the emergency hospital right away because it can be fatal. When you have a severe allergic reaction to food, you may have various symptoms such as unconsciousness, trouble breathing, high-pitched breathing, slurred speech, vomiting, dizziness, chest tightness, and chest discomfort, among others.

How Should You Handle Mild Allergic Reactions?

The tingling of the lips and mouth can be felt. You may also have additional symptoms such as an upset stomach or irritation on your skin. Although there isn't a long list of ways to deal with allergic reactions, the following suggestions may assist to alleviate the symptoms.

Do not even try foods that can trigger allergic responses, and do not wait for your symptoms to go away.

The mild symptoms of the foods may cause you to be concerned. Consult your doctor to determine what foods you should consume more of and which foods you should avoid.

Rashes on the skin can also indicate that you have a food allergy. It is not required to have skin rashes all of the time, but rashes related to food allergies include swelling, hives, redness, and itching.

Food sensitivities can cause rashes around the mouth, face, and neck. Rashes, diarrhoea, sneezing, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and watery eyes are all symptoms that show it's a virus.
