The story of David Lett and Oregon Wine begins when he was studying viticulture at the University of California, Davis. In 1965, he moved to Oregon and planted 3,000 pinot noir vines. He knew the region was better than any other place in the world for making pinot noir outside of Burgundy. After a trip to Europe, Lett decided to pursue his passion. Today, Oregon has become one of the most popular wine regions in the world.

After studying viticulture at the University of California Davis, Lett moved to Oregon and founded his own vineyard, Eyrie Vineyards, in 1966. He made Oregon wine history by planting the first Pinot Noir in the state, a grape that could compete with the best Pinot Noir in Burgundy. He then moved to the Willamette Valley and began growing his first vines. His son, Jason, later took over the vineyard management and winemaking duties. His influence on Oregon's wine industry

A longtime fan of Oregon wines, Lett had originally intended to attend dental school, but a visit to Napa Valley changed his plans. He enrolled at UC Davis and traveled to France to learn more about the wine industry. His passion for wine led him to Oregon, where he found a climate similar to the Burgundy region of France. Because Oregon has such a long growing season, it is possible to harvest the grapes at the peak of ripeness. By contrast, most California winemakers were finding success with warm-weather grapes.

Lett traveled to Oregon with 3,000 cuttings of vines. He planted them in a nursery outside Corvallis in February 1965. He also planted Period I and II Pinot Noir, as well as Riesling. He then searched for an ideal vineyard location in the Willamette Valley. Lett's efforts would result in several commercial vineyards and many high-quality Oregon wines.
