How to select the right air conditioner for your home

Selecting the right air conditioner for your home is less about which brand makes the best air conditioners in India, and more about finding the right fit. What are the factors that go into determining whether an AC works for your space and your needs? There are actually a handful of points that need to be considered. We list some of them below.

  • Tonnage versus room space

Before buying an AC, ensure that you have in hand the dimensions of the rooms you intend to have air conditioned. You will have definitely noticed that ACs are tagged as 1 ton, 1.5 ton, or 2 ton. If this is your first AC purchase, you might wonder what that label refers to. Tonnage is linked to the AC’s ability to cool a certain area.

If you select an insufficient tonnage, your room will never get cool enough. One might then think that it is better to be safe, rather than sorry, and therefore opt for a very high tonnage. However, this can work out even worse, because if you go overboard with regards to tonnage, the room in question will always feel uncomfortably high on moisture. Buyers could reference this ready-made chart to aim for the right fit.

  • 1 ton - 100 to 120 square feet

  • 1.5 tons - 150 to 180 square feet

  • 2 tons - up to 240 square feet

  • Upfront cost versus long-term costs

A lot of the time, you will pay for an air conditioner with a lower BEE rating or a low ISEER rating. But before you are tempted to go for an AC that is not energy efficient or environmentally-friendly to save a couple of thousands on your purchase, consider the fact that energy efficiency is also linked to your electricity consumption. This is in turn linked to the amount you pay as electricity bills. A single new AC added to a household’s electricity consumption can double or triple electricity bills. Do some quick math to figure whether you would rather save long-term or upfront.

  • Split AC versus window AC

Split ACs are being celebrated as the more efficient of the two types, but there is a growing consensus that for smaller rooms, a window AC might be preferable. Do keep in mind that window ACs are slightly bulkier, however, and being placed usually at waist or hip level. This might get in the way or hog space.

  • Inverter ACs versus non inverter ACs

Most households would do better with inverter ACs that adjust compressor speeds according to the heat in the room. Besides being affected by the general temperature outside, rooms get warmer when there are more gadgets running, and when there are more people in the room, or when sunlight is filtering in through windows.

  • Servicing

Always check what the brand offers in terms of maintenance and servicing. Most air conditioner manufacturers will offer a number of free maintenance visits and servicing. Compare what different brands that you are considering offer before making a purchase. You definitely need at-home servicing because you cannot possibly take your AC to the service centre.

  • Sampling

Step into a nearby electronics and appliances store, and see if you can get a feel of the AC you have chosen, and if it is actually the best air conditioner in India. You can always buy the same model online later, but just like one might take a car for a test drive, it is a good idea to take a closer look at your AC.

Today, with access to no cost EMIs with the Bajaj Finserv EMI Network Card that lets you pay in bite-sized monthly instalments, you can enjoy your device upfront and pay in up to 24 monthly instalments. That solves any issues linked to having to pay a large sum of money upfront. It might, therefore, be more advisable to stretch your budget a little in the interest of long-term savings.
