Ten facts about safe skin and cosmetics
Here are ten facts everyone should know about their skin, and how and why it should be treated with safe cosmetics products on a daily basis.
Fact: The skin is the largest organ of the body;
Fact: More than 70% of what is applied to the skin penetrates our body and bloodstream;
Fact: Women put on average more than 5 pounds of lotions and creams on their skin every year;
Fact: More than 10,500 chemicals are used in the manufacture of cosmetics;
Fact: Many of these ingredients are toxic (poisonous);
Fact: As with tobacco, prior to regulation, no one is currently aware of the cumulative effects of these toxic substances on humans after decades of use;
Fact: Some of these toxic ingredients are directly linked to cancer, birth defects, respiratory problems, liver and kidney disease, and more;
Fact: Recent clinical studies in pregnant women have shown that the same toxin is present in similar concentrations in fetal blood and passes through the umbilical cord;
Fact: The European Union (EU) has banned more than 1,100 toxic ingredients to make safe cosmetics;
Fact: The US banned 10.
Now let's take a closer look at some of this information.
Yes, the skin is the largest organ in the body and it is also very porous. Also, it has direct absorption and that absorption is not filtered by the liver or kidneys. It surrounds these organs and evidence of this can be found in the form of patches such as nicotine patches and other very effective healing patches. In practice, the skin becomes unfiltered access to the bloodstream.
Much of what is applied to the skin is toxic, and although we know from scientific research that 50 to 70% can and will be absorbed by the body, the cosmetic industry claims that low exposure to these toxic ingredients does no harm. In fact, they say it's safe to use toxic (poisonous) chemicals linked to cancer, infertility, birth defects and other health problems because the amounts are so small in any product. There are two problems. No one uses just one product a day, and no one knows the cumulative effects of using this toxic substance over decades. Just think of the products you use every day, toothpastes, soaps, shampoos, deodorants, body lotions, shaving creams, detergents, moisturizers, and much more. This exposes everyone to hundreds of these toxic chemicals every day and this will negatively affect them over time.
